English Core Class Descriptions

Beginner

Students will enhance their English by focusing on comprehension and application in a variety of foundational areas. Through learning reading comprehension strategies, types of writing, vocabulary building, grammar, research skills, and speaking/listening, students will work toward a final presentation and a short argument-based paper.  

Intermediate

This class emphasizes the development of close reading skills, grammar and vocabulary, and evidence based arguments through engaging with a variety of reading and writing styles. Students will work toward a final presentation by engaging with opportunities to improve speaking skills in debates and writing skills through a thesis-driven essay.  

Advanced

This course offers students an opportunity to prepare for entering an American classroom through orienting students to common expectations. Students will continue to advance their reading, writing, and speaking skills through engaging with short stories and college admission prompts that will be used to generate classroom discussion and written responses. Students will focus on creating organized, clear, and concise ideas while working toward a final research-based presentation.

The Business & Entrepreneurship Lab

The Business & Entrepreneurship Lab will introduce you to business practices and concepts needed to succeed in business. The classes will equip students with an introduction to core business knowledge and skills.  A portion of the classes will be devoted to entrepreneurship, offering a unique learning experience to students who aspire to start and operate their own businesses.  Topics covered include ideation,  the entrepreneurship mindset, customer feedback, marketing, communications, financial forecasting and selling. The course work will culminate into the development of a business plan that will be pitched to a panel of judges.

Exciting Science

Boom! Pop! Zap! Science is all around us. This hands-on science course will have you interact with physics and chemistry principles through conducting exploratory experiments. Want to make explosions with coke and mentos, figure out how roller coasters work, or try to protect an egg from cracking when it is dropped from high up? Join one of the levels of Exciting Science!

Let's Draw!

Do you enjoy imagining great stories? Do you want to see through the eyes of your favorite story characters?  In the levels of this course, you will have the opportunity to see your ideas come to life on paper. Whether you are inspired to draw from life around you or from your imagination, this class is for you.

SEI 2024 FAQs

What is SEI?

SEI is a premier English development, cultural acclimation, and travel experience in America for international students ages 11-18. Over the past 10 years, over 1,100 students from 20 countries have graduated from the program.

Any international student going into Grades 6-10 may attend SEI. Additionally, all students entering a WA Global school are required to attend SEI.

Arrive: July 14th

Classes: July 15-26th

Travel Week: July 27th-Aug 3rd

2 weeks of classes are held on the campus of Wheaton College in the Chicago area. Travel week will be spend visiting famous landmarks in Northern California (San Francisco, Silicon Valley, top ranked universities, and more!)
